Prof. Alitto has been involved professionally in Chinese language and culture related services ever since he first served as a translator for Chinese officials visiting the U.S. after President Nixon's ground-breaking visit to China in 1972. Later, he served on the negotiating team assigned to recover the EP-3 military airplane downed on China's Hainan Island in 2001.

In short, Prof. Alitto is ostensibly the "poster boy" for adults learning Chinese: he began studying the language at the age of 25. Nowadays he frequently visits in China (and Taiwan), where he lectures on Chinese history—in Mandarin!
